Stop Doing and Start Creating Impact and Value

Due to the pressures of the business and their job, too many managers are simply showing up everyday and doing. While that is important, as a leader, the job is all about creating impact and value with your team, business and self. Your role is to inspire, motivate, develop and grow your people, and in turn, they will help you accomplish those to-do’s and the personal and professional goals you have laid out.

In my late twenties, I had a boss, Nikki Meyers. Nikki was all about tapping into each managers needs and wants to help them achieve their own goals and those of the business. She focused intently on each individually and shifted her own style to meet them where they were and put a spotlight on them so they can see their blind spots and acknowledge their strengths. As a result, the group of us were able to excel in our work, achieve our goals, and gain great respect and trust for her.

Creating value for both the team and the business—requires a strategic approach to leadership. Below are actionable strategies to enhance your impact, add measurable value, and elevate your leadership style.

1. Embrace Clear Communication

Clear and effective communication is the backbone of impactful leadership. Share your vision and goals with clarity, ensuring alignment across your team. Conduct regular one-on-one and team meetings to foster transparency and trust. Open channels of communication not only improve efficiency but also build stronger team cohesion.

Pro Tip: Use active listening to understand your team’s challenges and feedback. This helps you address issues promptly and demonstrates that you value their input, and they feel heard.

2. Lead with Purpose and Empathy

Leadership is not just about directing tasks; it’s about inspiring and supporting your team. Empathy allows you to connect with your team members on a deeper level, understanding their motivations and challenges. By aligning your leadership style with a clear purpose, you can inspire your team to perform at their best.

Pro Tip: Recognize individual and team achievements frequently. This boosts morale and shows your team that their efforts are appreciated.

3. Invest in Development

A high-performing team is a reflection of a leader who prioritizes development. Encourage ongoing learning and skill-building by providing access to training resources, mentorship and coaching opportunities, or stretch assignments.

Pro Tip: Conduct regular development conversations to align individual career aspirations with organizational goals. This fosters loyalty and reduces turnover. Don’t make it just a performance review requirement, make it proactive and intentional.

4. Make Data-Driven Decisions

Impactful managers utilize data to make informed decisions. Whether it’s tracking team productivity, project outcomes, or customer feedback, leveraging data ensures you’re focusing on areas with the greatest impact.

Pro Tip: Share relevant data with your team to drive a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

5. Champion Collaboration

Collaboration within and across departments creates synergies that drive innovation and efficiency. Break down silos by promoting cross-functional teamwork and encouraging diverse perspectives.

Pro Tip: Facilitate brainstorming sessions or joint projects that allow team members to work together creatively.

6. Prioritize Time Management

Effective leaders know how to prioritize their time and energy. Delegate tasks that can be handled by team members and focus on strategic initiatives that align with business objectives. Teach yourself and your team members how to set boundaries, say no, and prioritize their workload.

Pro Tip: Use time-blocking or digital tools to manage your schedule, minimize distractions, prioritize to-do lists, and make skill-based assignments.

7. Cultivate a Growth Mindset

A growth mindset fuels both individual and organizational success. Model this by embracing challenges, learning from failures, asking for and welcoming feedback, and encouraging your team to do the same.

Pro Tip: Share stories of your own growth journey to inspire and humanize your leadership – vulnerability is power. Seek feedback consistently and share your learnings.

Final Thoughts

Creating impact and value as a corporate manager is about balancing the needs of your team with the strategic goals of your business. By embracing clear communication, leading with purpose, investing in development, and fostering collaboration, you not only drive success but also elevate your leadership style. Remember, impactful leadership is a continuous journey of growth and adaptation.
