Remove the mask and embrace authentic leadership!

In the ever-evolving corporate landscape, the concept of leadership has undergone significant transformation. As companies strive for competitive advantage and employee retention, the demand for authentic leadership has never been more pronounced. Authentic leaders inspire trust, foster commitment, and drive performance by embodying transparency, integrity, and a genuine concern for their team’s well-being.

Research from the Harvard Business Review indicates that companies with strong ethical leadership outperform their peers by over 35% in revenue growth. Furthermore, a 2018 Gallup poll showed that organizations with engaged employees—often the result of authentic leadership—experience 21% higher profitability and 17% higher productivity. These statistics underscore the tangible benefits of leading authentically.

While the advantages are clear, practicing authentic leadership is not without its challenges. For one, the pressure to conform to organizational norms can be overwhelming. Many corporate professionals fear that showing vulnerability or deviating from the status quo may be perceived as weakness. Additionally, cultural and generational differences within teams can complicate attempts to forge genuine connections.

For instance, when I was working to shed my command-and-control approach in partnering with team members, it wasn’t as hard for me to change, then it was to change the perception others had of me. No matter how hard one may try, dismantling pre-existing perceptions can be difficult but not impossible.

Some prominent examples of authentic leadership include Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, who transformed the company’s culture by emphasizing empathy, collaboration, and growth mindset, and turning ‘know it alls’ into ‘learn it all’, creating a resurgence in innovation and team morale.

Similarly, Horst Schulze, Ritz-Carlton President and COO advocated for “servant leadership,” focusing on supporting employees and empowering them to provide exceptional customer service

If you want to transform yourself into an authentic leader who then, in turn, can shift your own team or company culture, you need to be intentional, consistent, and I would even say, persistent, in working on yourself, demonstrating vulnerability and transparency, and genuinely connecting with those around you.

Here are 3 tips for you to begin to focus on, and you can always reach out to me for a tailored action plan to guide you (discoverycall):

1. Self-Reflection and Continuous Learning

Authentic leadership begins with knowing oneself. Regular self-reflection helps in understanding your core values, strengths, and areas for improvement. Additionally, invest in continuous learning—be it through executive coaching, leadership workshops, or professional reading. The more self-aware you are, the better you can lead authentically.

2. Build Genuine Relationships

Effective leadership is about building strong, transparent, and empathetic relationships. Take the time to understand your team’s aspirations, concerns, and feedback. Foster an environment where open communication is encouraged. Melissa even validated that creating safe spaces within the work environment is crucial for trust and mutual respect. Leading with empathy not only strengthens bonds but also enhances team cohesion and loyalty.

3. Lead by Example and Stay Consistent

Authentic leaders walk the talk. Demonstrate the values and behaviors you wish to see in your team. Consistency in actions builds credibility and trust. Moreover, be willing to show vulnerability and admit mistakes—it humanizes you and strengthens your team’s trust. Remember, authenticity is not about perfection but about staying true to oneself and one’s values.

The emphasis on authentic leadership is only just gaining speed and you want to ensure you are working on yourself to become the leader your team members need and companies want, if you want to achieve your career goals.

So, embrace self-reflection, build genuine relationships, and lead by example, and you will transform their leadership style, drive business results, and create a more engaged, productive, and loyal workforce. The rewards—both personal and professional—are profound.
