Mid Year Leadership Check Up – How Are You Doing?

I don’t know about you, but time is just flying these days, or maybe it is my age talking. But it is already mid July; which means 6 months of 2014 are gone, never to return again, and fortunately 6 months are left. That gives me and you time to achieve the goals we laid out for the year; but just as fast as the first six went, so with the second.

Are you ready? Do you have a plan, but more importantly did you have a plan for the first half of the year? If so, how did you do? If not, what is it you want to achieve between now and December 31st?

 As a leader, it is critical you have a plan, a map for not only yourself but for those who follow you – by choice and by reporting structure.  And, since half a year is gone, as the quote above states, you definitely are in a time crunch to achieve your yearly goals – but it is very doable!


If you had a set of career, business and life goals, objectives and measurements for the first six months, this is the perfect time to review those goals and assess how you did. But not only if you achieved them (or not), but also:

  • How did I perform in planning, prioritizing and executing on those goals?
  • How effective was I in addressing and removing all obstacles, barriers and physical or mental roadblocks?
  • How productive was I in engaging my team in my goals; providing clear communication, collaboration and engagement?
  • What did I do really well and what can I do differently over the next six months?

Responses to the above provide great information and guidance regarding any adjustments you need to make to your current goals.

If you did not have a set of goals at the beginning of the year…. there is no better time than now to establish them; keeping in mind, that to lead you need to provide yourself and your team a roadmap toward success.

  • Define 3-5 career, business and life goals and objectives for yourself and your team.
    • If your business and/or company assigns you goals based on your role (i.e. Revenue, Customer Acquisitions, etc.), then simply formulize them into your overall 2014 Plan.
    • Leadership means being a lifetime student of personal and professional growth – include training and development goals.
    • Though work/life balance can be hard if not impossible, include life goals that help to integrate all areas of your life, i.e. finances, hobbies, spirituality, etc.
    • Establish measurements of success for each goal, i.e. Revenue $, Profit $, # of Customers Acquired, etc.
    • Think through the people you will need to engage to support you (and your team) in achieving those goals.
      • Then note how, as a leader, you will work with them on those specific goals.
      • Share and communicate those goals with your manager, team, and even family – all of the people that either your goals impact in any way, and/or require support and assistance.
      • Discipline yourself to use those goals on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis – considering every activity or task, priority and decision you are making and whether or not they align to the goals you have defined.


My absolute favorite quote is “The world steps aside for the man (or woman) who knows where he (or she) is going!”  James Allen.

Allow the world to step aside for you; establish a plan, take action, assess your achievements, and make adjustments along the way, until you have achieved your goals. That will put an exclamation point at the end of both 2014 and LEADER… and, you will have achieved great things at the same time.
