Silence is Golden for Great Leadership!

If you have been reading our LEADERtips Weekly, you know how often I discuss the importance of goal setting and time management as key success factors for anyone, especially leaders.

One of my 2014 goals was to learn how to ‘go quiet’. I had been reading how it can add even greater benefit to pursuing my goals. ARTICLE: 15 Minutes of Silence, The Secret of Staying Sane in Life, or Psychology Today article: Getting Your Daily Minimum Requirement of Silence

But, I questioned whether or not I could sit still for a single minute, let alone 10, 15 or 20 minutes. I kept telling myself that I committed to this goal and was determined to take action on it and at minimum, try.

Then, as if divine intervention, I saw a Facebook posting regarding a free 21 Day Meditation Challenge with Oprah and Deepak Chopra. I figured, hey if it is free, I have absolutely nothing to lose; except 1-20 minutes for a few days.

The first day was painful as I squirmed in my office chair praying for Deepak’s closing words. It seemed like eternity. It was the same days two through four. Then on day 5, I fell into a deep trance as I repeated the mantra of the day. As if it was seconds later, the closing words were spoken, and the ‘quiet time’ was over. I was stunned a 19 minute meditation was over; and I felt so unbelievable calm, focused and energized. Other benefits includes becoming self aware and mindfulness, patient, listening,. I have found the greatest benefit is that I can call on my morning mantra, affirmation and state of being, at any time during the day. It becomes a part of me.

Do you meditate today? If so, what benefits does meditation provide you?

If you are not a meditator, but agree it can add significantly to your leadership success, here are LEADERtips to get you started:

  • Go to this link for a SAMPLE MEDITATION AUDIO
  • Acknowledge what you like, dislike, fear, or simply don’t understand about meditation. Write it out, even google articles, studies, or programs and read the experiences from other individuals: professionals and leaders:
  • Seek online, from friends and colleagues, a program you resonate with: simply google mediation programs and look for samples, like the above, that you can check out the approach the program takes.
  • Forgive yourself if you think you ‘can’t’ or ‘won’t’ be able to sit quiet for 15-20 minutes. It won’t happen on the first attempt, but trust me, give it will over time. You will find yourself looking forward to that time of quiet.
  • Keep notes of your experience before, during and after; becoming self aware of your mental, emotional and physical response to your new discipline.
  • Reward yourself for taking it on – even if you do not stick it out. You can always go back if the first attempt doesn’t work. Heck, it took me dozens of times when quitting smoking over 20+ years. Firm habits are hard to break.
  • Acknowledge – habits can be both learned and engrained. A better reason to do it – if you have a bad habit, i.e. my smoking, replace it with a new one – mediation is a perfect habit to use.
  • Experts claim it takes 21 days to learn and engrain a new habit. I say it will take you 7 days to appreciate and experience the benefit of mediation to your leadership style. Give it a shot!

“Some people think that meditation takes time away from physical accomplishment…Most people, however, find that meditation creates more time than it takes.” Peter McWilliams
