Leaders come in all shapes and sizes, as well as possess different qualities, traits and skills. But, strip away the physical and the intangible or intellectual, and there are common roles any successful leader is expected to act on:

  • Artist – creates the vision, road map and culture for the business by which the team will follow.
  • Engineer – streamlines and systemizes the execution of the vision and road map, so the team is fully optimized to contribute their best.
  • Student – learns, expands and grows, from within and outside the company and industry, to maximize their skills, talents, experiences and ideas, as well as those around them.
  • Conductor – orchestrates the team as a collective whole toward the single vision and mission.
  • Forecaster – applies priority and attention to the financial acumen of measurement, analysis and accountability to the business plans, as a means of forecasting and steering the business toward growth and profitability.
  • Coach – guides and supports team members (individually and as the collective whole) toward their full potential.

  • Define a goal in the above plan with a schedule for completing those assessments throughout the year, and always be willing to listen, consider, adjust and change. As a leader it is your obligation to do so.
  • Recognize the strengths or areas for development in your team members and proactively coach and work with them to focus on their own growth as well. Feel free to share the above documents.

As Vince Lombardi once said, “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.”

Understanding the role(s) of leader is your first step toward mastering leadership. For those that never assess, acknowledge or understand their effectiveness as a leader, they remain a novice, always questioning or blaming others for their lack of advancement and achievement. Assess your role as leader today and be a master tomorrow.
