Have You Put 10,000 Hours In To Your Leadership Style?

January 20, 2014, by , Posted in Blog,Leadership,RICH Tips, 1 Comment

It is often written; chess players, athletes, and scholars, put thousands of hours into learning, practicing and mastering their skill and talent. Some studies would suggest it takes upwards of 10,000 hours of dedicated and focused training, learning and applying, to do so.

Leaders require the same.

“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other” John F. Kennedy

Put it another way, and in business terms, if you believe this theory to be true, it would take an average of 5 years (2088 work hours in a year) of learning, preparing, practicing and executing full time on the leadership skills, traits and qualities which would allow you to become  a proficient, effective and productive leader.

But many argue it is not the execution but the preparation which is the key to successful mastering of leadership.

But the ten-thousand-hour research reminds us that “the closer psychologists look at the careers of the gifted, the smaller the role innate talent seems to play and the bigger the role preparation seems to play.”

If that is so, mastering leadership doesn’t come to someone simply by having a fancy title or the responsibility for managing people; (even just one). It takes preparation, practice, execution, assessment and adjustment to master the skill of leadership. Yet many ‘managers’ consider themselves leaders simply because of an org chart.

That said; here are LEADERtips™ to guide you in defining your own 10,000 Hour Ignite Your LEADERship Mastery Plan, so you can become the masterful leader you want to be.

         – Make a list of the skills, talents, traits, qualities, expertise and achievements you currently possess which contribute greatly to your leadership style.

         – Self-assess those areas (and others) on a scale of 1-10 (1 being ‘inexperienced’ and 10 – ‘a master’). This will allow you to identify those things you need to develop, practice or master.  Complimentary Self-Assessment

  • BONUS Tip – Seek input from your employees, peers and managers – direct and indirect.

  1. Qualities says:

In the past, it was thought that some people were born with certain traits that fitted them to assume command, and the study of leadership consisted of analyzing these traits. Personal factors are indeed a factor in leadership, but many studies have pointed up the fact tat the nature of the situation and the composition of the group are also of great importance.
