LEADERtips – Change is Inevitable, Success is Not!

Change is inevitable; especially in business. So, then why are many of the leaders responsible for managing and leading change, resistant to it?  After all, a key role for any leader is that of a change agent.

In today’s ever changing business climate, for both the company and its leaders to grow, expand, and differentiate themselves, they have to change; whether forced or embraced. How you as leader take on that change will define your future for growth and success within your company and in business.

LEADERtips for Change:

  •          If you are not a fan of change, confront yourself and determine why. Then put tactics in place for overcoming those reasons:
    • Complete the following assessment and use it to identify areas for development – CHANGE ASSESSMENT
    • Discuss the reasons, excuses and fears that come up for you when considering change; look back from childhood, school and forward as to what experiences or events provoked your resistance to change
    • Write out the impacts, consequences and the value of change; weighing the values against the consequences.
  •          As change occurs; provoked by you or someone else, simply consider the impact to the business, its people and you – both benefits and risks. Keep it black and white without personal bias.
  •          Construct a Change Plan to support the communication, execution and follow through when implementing the change.
  •          If you find yourself not supporting the change, seek out the decision makers for more information. Even challenge the change, but only with facts, evaluation, and evidence (if applicable).
  •          Prepare, plan, practice and then practice again a communication plan that outlines the need for the change, the benefits to the business and people, the consequences if the change does not happen, and the vision for the company and your team as a result of it.
  •          When communicating the message – be clear, concise, and consistent with the messaging of the company.
  •          Change often fails due to lack of execution, follow up and accountability. Include in your change plan the steps, tasks, assignments, and timeline the change will take place.
  •          Assess, adjust and follow through. Leaders make mistakes. Therefore, it is your responsibility to assess, report and adjust to ensure the change is delivering the results expected or is ‘changed’.

Change is inevitable… and as a leader it is critical for you to embrace and excel in it.

Remember, Change, when put on paper in black and white, eliminates all fears and resistance the mind can construct; even within leaders. But, success in leadership is demonstrated when those leaders can push through those blocks, and craft a plan which will lead to success for their people, the company and themselves.
